Passions and Hobbies to Money Makers.
Let’s talk about passions and hobbies; have you ever thought about how they can work for you? I sometimes feel like people don’t understand the power we now have with the boom of the digital age especially in regards to everyday jobs and career options. We are at a point in existence where we are able to turn any hobby or passion into a money making career option and I’ve yet to see people fully take advantage of that. Before now, this may not have been a viable option when discussing career decisions and job positions, but as a society we have advanced to the point where technology can make a career out of anything.
You may be thinking that your career has to be streamlined according to traditional job positions, even though you find that none of that interests you. I would like to point out that careers have become so broad that traditional positions are not the only option anymore. We have numerous eCommerce platforms such as etsy, shopify, squarespace and others that have provided the opportunity for individuals to turn their hobbies into careers and actual businesses. We also have social media platforms that do a similar job.
One of my most recent favorite platforms to visit is one called depop. You may or may not have heard about it, but depop is an online fashion marketplace that allows for buying, selling and connecting people globally within the fashion industry. With platforms like depop, anyone can sell a product or create a small business on it. I often find merchandisers whose products are handmade bracelets, or painted sneakers. Things they learned to do through childhood hobbies that have now become a source of income for them. Craig Jenkins-Sutton, the owner of Topiarius, a garden and floral design company, never had any formal training but simply started with a hobby. Gardening was just something he had done as a hobby and loved, and one day he decided to offer up his gardening and landscaping service to the people around him which opened him up to a new business venture and became his career path. Of course, it is not always that easy, but the idea remains, you can turn your hobby into a career.
Product and service aside, we also have media. Maybe you like editing videos, or recording videos and making shorts films, you now have the opportunity to do something with that interest, turn it into a profit making career that you inevitably enjoy. So I want you to take some time to think through your passions and interests and really research them because you have so many opportunities all around you that don’t tie you down to solely traditional career options. It may be that right now you have an everyday job that doesn’t seem like the right fit for you, well here’s your sign to use the experiences from that job in alignment with your interests to make a career for yourself that you will love. Whether you want to turn your passion into a career or simply a gig work, you need to begin somewhere.
